Kathryn Laferriere

Research Consultant and Knowledge Translation Coordinator

Katie Laferriere at Canadian Association of Geographers conferenceI have always been interested in both health and the environment. I began my Honours Bachelor in Health Sciences with the intention of continuing on to medical school, but while I was there I became passionate about environmental issues and added a Minor in Environmental Studies. Through my minor I met health geographer Dr. Eric Crighton, which led me to pursue a Master’s in Geography. For my MA thesis, I studied new mothers’ risk perceptions as they relate to their children’s environmental health.

Through my research, my interest in issues of environmental health equity developed further when I found that some women faced socioeconomic and cultural barriers to accessing information and to taking action to protect their children. I met Dr. Jeff Masuda and Dr. Aaron Franks at the Canadian Association of Geographers conference in 2013, where I presented some of my research findings. Not long after completing my MA I began working remotely as a research consultant with The Centre for Environmental Health Equity.

I live in downtown Ottawa, and I enjoy cooking, yoga, rock climbing, and being outdoors.
